We have been having a great time with Alexa and the grandkids love it. We are adding more smart home products little by little and we really enjoy the hands free convenience. Great purchase!
This is our second Echo. I bought it for my wife for the kitchen and she loves it. I use the original one for listening to my music library but she uses it for everything from timers to weather to Jeopardy and anything else you can think of. I think she thinks that Alexa is a real person (just kidding).Needless to say we are an Echo family and love the devices. On a cautionary note, it did not install flawlessly and I had to call Amazon for help which is why I took away 1 star.
I love Alexa. Just tossing this out - we own 14 of them spread across 3 properties. So if you want a non-biased review you've come to the wrong guy. We were heading to the lake and I actually turned around to go back because I'd forgotten to pack Alexa (thus the need to buy MORE!). I say "good night" to Alexa and thank her for telling me the temperature. But all that said, these are EVEN BETTER than the original. The sexy case is much nicer than plain black or white. They sound better. The Mic hears you better. Everything about these guys is better. Can I give this thing 6 stars please?
While I was happy with the 1st generation I was intrigued with what the second had to offer, so I ordered one and wasn’t disappointed.I’d always had trouble getting Alexa’s attention when music was playing. That is no longer the case because Alexa can now hear me even in loud noise.Music sounds so much better with the second gen echo.I am disappointed with the music everywhere option because my echo tap is not included, even though I enabled voice activation and love it for it’s portability (take it into the garage and patio to enjoy my music out there).Hopefully they will integrate the tap with music everywhere soon.Otherwise I am enjoying my new improved Alexa!
Alexa is almost as smart as Cortana, but this smart home stuff is just plain BS. Two devices--an echo and a smart phone, and two distinct logons to turn a light bulb off and on. Really dumb! Most of the smart home devices require an smartphone app that requires account registration and logon to the company's web site. Say you have multiple smart devices from different manufacturers: Each would require an app download to further clutter up your bandwidth and data usage. This entire concept needs re-engineering. It is very difficult to make a smart home with really dumb technology.
When I saw that AOL was killing off IM I needed something to replace it. So my wife and I could message each other in different parts of the house. I had read a lot about the Echo. Now we can "Drop In" to the other areas of the house. Using the Alexa app I can talk to my wife and she doesn't have to get up to get the phone. And as a Prime member I had access to 1000's of songs and albums I had bought over the years from Amazon. I made a playlist for my that has over 500 songs. She shuffles it and doesn't hear a repeat for days.I can also use the app to say "Hello" to my dog when I'm on a break at work. I use the "Ocean Sounds" skill for a soothing sound for nap time.Timers, radio stations, news, weather, high and low tide, TV show times plus 1000's more skills.
I think the sound is quite good for a small speaker. I use it mostly for getting the weather and listening to music in my kitchen. It also works to help me divide recipes. It is small (perfect in an overcrowded kitchen) and can get quite loud so I use it from another room sometimes. I had friends over for dinner and they loved the fact they could just change the music so easily, Dinner became a music free-for-all.
I have had Amazon Music for quite some time. After I bought the Echo, I also subscribed to Music Unlimited. The Echo has great sound quality and being able to listen to any song anytime is wonderful. In addition to Amazon playlists, I created many of my own and we have used it every day since receiving it. I should mention that , although we have two Bose CD players, we haven't used them since I got the Echo. It has many other uses which I haven't yet explored but I consider it worth the cost just for the music.
