Anyone who is still using a box grater for citrus zest really owes it to themselves to try a 'rasp grater' like this. If you use it upside down, it is easy to see when you have planed all the zest and are down to the bitter white part pith, and the zester will hold the zest for when you need to measure it.
There's no reason to buy more money for a name brand because all you're paying for is the name. This grater is stainless steel, made in the US, comes with a plastic protective case and is professional level quality. All graters are sharp, as they should be, and this one is no exception. You want it sharp to do the job effectively. I've used it to grate citrus, nutmeg, hard cheese and more. I will be purchasing these for Christmas gifts, wedding gifts, and friendship gifts from now on, and it will be this brand from this company! I do not work for this company, but I should because I could sell tons of these from how excited I am about the craftsmanship of this product! It looks just like the zesters used on the Food Channel by all the top chefs, it is full size and hand-comfortable!
I'd been using a handled grates-in-both-directions cheese grater for grating parmesan cheese and zesting citrus, but was unhappy with zesting results. This zester is amazingly better than the previous one and viciously sharp. I made lemon frosted biscotti for Christmas, zesting 7 very large lemons with ease and aplomb using this zester. The comes-with-it plastic blade guard is necessary to keep the teeth sharp and to prevent accidental injury from the incredibly sharp tines. This was a great buy. Recommended.
If you've been using a box grater to zest your citrus your entire life like I had, treat yo' self and buy this zester. There are no words that can properly convey the difference between zesting with a jack-of-all-trades box grater and a zester which only has the one job. When I finally splurged (all $8 - why have I been so cheap all these years?!) I truly learned what it meant to zest. And the difference between what I had deemed as fine my entire life and what I had actually been missing made me question my entire existence. What else am I doing wrong? Which other mundane tasks could be made 1000% easier if I only knew better? Should I be leaving my occasionally unsatisfactory relationship? It's a slippery slope. So in conclusion: Yes, buy the zester. But beware, you may have an existential crisis on your hands.
I ordered this because I use a lot of ginger and citrus zest, and the graters I owned gave me limited choices - too large, much too large and mush, basically - none of which were entirely satisfactory. So I bought this and tried it for the first time today, and I'm very pleased. Simple in design, very effective (a very generous heaping tablespoon of finely shredded ginger in about 5 passes), very sharp (watch those knuckles!), easy to use and simple to clean, plus it has a snap-on safety cover that fits very snugly and securely which makes storage in a drawer possible and practical without risking the loss of skin. I think a small kitchen brush or hand/nail brush might prove helpful to really clean the tiny teeth if it gets gummed up, but for now the scrubby back of a kitchen sponge works fine for me, and might work long-term. I just got it, so don't know how it will hold up over time.
This works well and is sharp but the metal is lightweight and flexes more than I would like. That being said it is fine otherwise and comes with a plastic cover to keep it sharp. I grated parmesan cheese and it did work OK.
Used this within 24 hours to zest lemons for wonderful lemon cookies for Easter. It worked great and was easy to clean in the dishwasher! Loved the ease of use, felt sturdy and am very appreciative of the guard. Realized how easily my fingernails can get in the way so I need to remember to be more careful.
Very impressed! This zester is the best. Delivery was very prompt as expected. I've been on this lemon water kick lately, but then I read how the zest has great benefits too. I've begun using this nifty zester to add organic lemon zest to my water, which gives the extra benefit of reducing inflammation and cleansing the body of impurities we add into our diet when we eat outside organic. The blade is very sharp, it works excellent! Watch out for your fingers, do not slip! The plastic blade cover is awesome. Keeps it from dulling if it contacts other objects in the drawer. Well worth it and beneficial! I haven't used it for cheese, but I cant see why it wont great there as well. Thanks!
